2 men killed in overnight crash near Monroe

MONROE, Wash. - Two men were found dead inside a car that crashed through a fence sometime early Sunday morning outside Monroe, officials said.

Snohomish County sheriff's deputies responded to the scene, in the 23200 block of Sophie Road, at about 5:25 a.m. after a delivery driver spotted the wreckage and called 911, said Lt. Rodney Rochon.

When deputies arrived, they found a car that had smashed through a fence, with two men inside. Both were dead, and it appeared the crash had happened some time before.

Neighbors told investigators they had heard something at about 1:30 a.m. but could see nothing unusual in the darkness.

A preliminary investigation found that the cause of death for both men was impalement and blunt force trauma. There were no immediate signs that the driver was impaired, and it appears excessive speed was the primary factor in the crash, Rochon said.

One of the victims is from Sultan and the other is from Monroe. The next of kin have been notified, but authorities did not release the men's names.

The case remains under investigation by the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office Collision Investigation Unit.
