2 killed in wrong-way head-on crash on Hwy. 20 near Coupeville
COUPEVILLE, Wash. - Two people were killed when a wrong-way driver crashed head-on into another car early Monday near Coupeville on Whidbey Island, the Washington State Patrol reports.
State troopers and medics responded to the scene, on Highway 20 at Libbey Road, at about 5:20 a.m. after receiving reports of a serious accident.
The drivers of both vehicles were found dead at the scene. There were no other occupants in either car.
A preliminary investigation found that a red Mazda was heading north in the southbound lane of Highway 20 when it crashed head-on into a Toyota Camry that was heading south in the southbound lane.
The driver of the Mazda was a 79-year-old Oak Harbor man. The driver of the Toyota Camry was a 59-year-old Oak Harbor woman.
The State Patrol says it unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
