2 derelict vessels towed from Anacortes harbor after mishap

SEATTLE - The state Department of Natural Resources has removed two derelict vessels from the Anacortes harbor because they damaged a pier and posed a potential threat to navigational safety in Guemes Channel.

The state took custody of the 125-foot vessels because officials were worried they could also damage the nearby ferry dock and the area's marine ecosystem.

On February 25, high winds pulled the two vessels away from an old dock, causing part of the pier to collapse. The pier is located on state-owned aquatic lands. The Department of Natural Resources wants to prevent further damage to the pier and other nearby property.

After the owner failed to take care of the problem, DNR officials hired a salvage team to move the ships to the Port of Seattle.

The two former Canadian Navy vessels have been tied up to the old pier for more than a decade.
