2 dead, including rescuer, at Pilchuck Falls

PILCHUCK FALLS, Wash. - A search and rescue worker has died trying to save another man who fell at Pilchuck Falls in Skagit County Saturday night.

Skagit County authorities said the 25-year-old hiker also died, and that his hiking partner had to be rescued as well.

The accident happened around 9:40 p.m. when the two men were separated from their hiking group and tried to make their way up from the falls near Lake Cavanaugh.

One of the men fell about 100 feet, and his partner - trying to rescue his friend - started to fall, and was left clinging to a tree until he was rescued.

A Skagit County Search and Rescue team was training on ATV's nearby and responded to their call for help. As the volunteer group tried to reach the two men, a 61-year-old volunteer fell and died.

Search and rescue teams recovered the bodies of the two victims on Sunday. Rescuers say difficult terrain and darkness kept them from recovering the victims the previous night.

The names of the victims are being withheld until next of kin has been notified.
