13-year-old charged in two downtown Seattle assaults
SEATTLE -- A 13-year-old boy has been charged in connection with two assaults in downtown Seattle this summer and was originally identified by police after a witness to one of the attacks spotted him in a candy store, according to charging documents from the King County Prosecutor's Office.
According to the charging documents, the 13-year-old was part of a group of five to seven men who attacked Joseph Crudo, a concierge and security guard at Westlake Park, when Crudo tried to intervene in a theft July 18.
Crudo told police the 13-year-old tried to steal his wallet after he had been knocked to the ground, and a City of Seattle park ranger who witnessed the attack said the 13-year-old kicked Crudo in the head several times.
Crudo suffered a concussion, a broken nose, a broken right arm, cuts, swelling, a chipped tooth and knee injuries during the attack.
According to charging documents, the park ranger who witnessed the attack saw the 13-year-old walk into a candy store near Westlake Park five days later and called police.
The 13-year-old told police he was at the park during the attack but was not involved, and he was identified and released, according to the charging documents.
On Aug. 18, the 13-year-old was arrested in connection with another attack in downtown Seattle.
According to the charging documents, the 13-year-old and two other men laughed at a man who had fallen off his skateboard near Third Avenue and Pine Street. The victim's friends told the men it wasn't funny and urged them to show some decency.
The victims were attacked by the 13-year-old and the two other men, with the 13-year-old kicking one of the victims in the head multiple times and taking his cellphone battery, according to the charging documents.
Crudo was able to identify the 13-year-old as the person who kicked him in the head and tried to steal his wallet based on the 13-year-old's booking photo from the Aug. 18 incident, according to the charging documents.
The 13-year-old has been charged with two counts of assault and one count of theft.
