      10 groups plan to apply to open WA charter schools

      SEATTLE (AP) Ten organizations are the first to say they plan to apply to open charter schools in Washington state.

      Tuesday is the deadline for filing a notice of intent to apply an application with the statewide Charter School Commission, so more organizations may turn in their notices early next week.

      The 10 so far include:

      Three proposals for Yakima, including an arts high school, a dual-language elementary and an alternative school that will start in the high school grades;

      A well known charter operator from California that would like to open a middle school in Tacoma;

      Science and technology focused proposals for Enunclaw, Seattle, Toppenish and Highline.

      An organization that would like to open a grade school for highly capable students in the Spokane area.

      A group that wants to open a military school for middle and high school students in Grays Harbor or another nearby county.
