1 wounded in officer-involved shooting near Port Orchard

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- A man was wounded in an officer-involved shooting near Port Orchard Tuesday afternoon, Kitsap County Sheriff's officials said.

The incident happened as deputies were called to the 8400 block of Bethel Burley Rd SE around noon for a check on a domestic violence protection order. The sister of a 42-year-old woman who lived at the home called police to say she hadn't heard from her sister and was worried about a man being with her who had a history of violence and a no contact order.

When deputies arrived at the home, the man and woman were out in front of the home near a car. Deputies confronted the situation and at some point, shots were fired and the 44-year-old man was wounded, in the chest according to sheriff's spokesman Scott Wilson.

"There was a confrontation between four sheriffs deputies and the suspect who was in the company of the sister," Wilson said. "What happened from then on remains to be seen during the course of the investigation other than shots were fired."

The man was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was listed in serious condition.

Police are still investigating the scene and have not said whether the man was armed or if he was wounded by a deputy's bullet or perhaps his own.

All four deputies are being interviewed by detectives and the investigation has been taken over by the state patrol so the sheriff's office isn't investigating its own people.

Despite all of the gunfire, the woman was not injured. It's unknown if she was assaulted before the deputies arrived.
