State troopers responded to the scene, on Highway 101 just west of Sequim, at about 9 a.m. after receiving a report of a serious collision.
Arriving at the scene, troopers and medics found one person dead at the scene and two others with critical injuries.
A preliminary investigation found that an eastbound Honda Accord that slowed for a turn was rear-ended by an F350 Ford pickup. Then another pickup trying to avoid the accident overturned as the driver swerved and lost control of the vehicle.
The driver of the pickup that swerved was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the F350 was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The third injured person was taken to a hospital with critical but unspecified injuries.
The highway will remain closed until about 1 p.m. for the crash investigation between Old Olympic Highway and Kitchen-Dick Road.
