Carty reviews 'Assassin's Creed,' 'Sing,' 'Fences,' 'Lion'
With the long holiday weekend, perhaps a trip to the movies is on your list?
Movies that are already open, include "Sing." starring the voices of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson and Seth MacFarlane. McConaughey is Buster Moon, a koala bear on the brink of losing his theater. In an effort to raise money to stay in business, he decides to host a singing contest among local animals. "Sing" is fantastic! It’s really a ton of fun for all ages, packed with great music and sweet emotion. It’s one of my top five animated movies of the year. Rated PG.
For something darker and more action-packed for the PG-13 crowd, the video game "Assassin's Creed" is now a major motion picture. It stars Michael Fassbender as a modern-day convict who gets a second chance at life. However, he’s forced to go back to 15th Century Spain, to the time of his ancestors in the secret society of assassins. "Assassin's Creed" reunites Fassbender with his "Macbeth" director Justin Kurzel and co-star Marion Cotillard. If you’re a fan of the game, you’ll likely enjoy the cinematic experience of the story. Directed by and starring Denzel Washington, "Fences" also stars Viola Davis. Based on the August Wilson play, "Fences" takes us back to the 1950s. It shows a family in Pittsburgh, navigating racial tension, family struggles and the father of the household trying to come to terms. "Fences" is PG-13.
Finally, Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman star in "Lion." It’s based on the true story of a boy in India who gets separated from his family and pushed into an orphanage in Calcutta. He’s adopted by an Australian family. And as he struggles into adulthood, he becomes determined to reunite with his lost family, utilizing Google Earth to trace his steps. It’s an incredible tale, beautifully acted and incredibly captivating. "Lion" is PG-13.
