Tips: Keep your carpets looking their best
Carpets get dirty, there's just no way around it. Sooner or later, they will need to be cleaned. But you can keep them looking nicer.
A few tips from Cheryl Reed with Angie's List.
"You need to clean it yourself, about three times a week. That's a little more vacuuming than some of us do, but three times a week is what the highly-rated experts say you should do yourself. That's going to keep the dirt from settling into the deep part of the carpet," Reed says.
To prevent dirt accumulations, Reed suggests asking all guests to remove their shoes at the door, but don't walk around with bare feet.
"I know some people love to do that, but what happens is you transfer your body oils and dirt and grime to the carpet, so that just contributes to it looking dirty and dingy," says Reed.
How often do you need to have your carpets cleaned? It all depends. Angie's List says about once a year. In low-traffic areas, carpets can go 12 to 18 months between cleanings, but some high-traffic areas may need to be professionally cleaned more often.
