It's estimated that one in four people has halitosis. Bad breath can cause embarrassment and anxiety.

According to Medical News Today, the most common cause of halitosis is bad oral hygiene. Dry mouth, smoking and certain foods and medicines can cause bad breath.

Self-treatments include brushing and flossing at least twice a day. You should do it right after you eat.

Dr. John Swartzberg, head of the editorial board at the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter, says you might also want to try brushing your tongue.

"A lot of times, in those cracks in your tongue, a lot of bacteria can live there. And bacteria cause the bad breath. It's the gasses produced by those bacteria,” Swartzberg said. “You can gently scrape your tongue or just brush your tongue with your toothbrush and it removes a lot of those bacteria and it really does help with the breath."

Do it in the morning after you eat or in the evening before you go to bed. And pay special attention to the back of the tongue.

You can buy a tongue cleaner for just a few bucks or use your toothbrush,
