Retirement can be an opportunity for better health

We've all heard people say, “I can't retire; it would kill me.” And they may truly believe that. But new research shows that for some people, retirement can reduce their chances of dying.

"This is only in people who retired because they could afford to retire and because they retired while they were healthy,” noted Dr. John Swartzberg, head of the editorial board at the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter.

Here's his takeaway from the new research. He says retirement gives people “an opportunity” to improve their health because they now have time to do it.

“So people who take advantage of the time they now have to exercise more, get a little more sleep, wind up being less stressed, able to quit smoking, etc., these folks are going to live longer and be happier,” he said.

The one study found that taking part in social groups after retirement is linked to longer life. In fact, the researchers concluded that group memberships have "effects that were comparable in size to those of physical activity."
