If you don't already know of a reputable mechanic, taking your car for repairs can leave you with more problems than you started with.

It's one reason auto repair is consistently among the top consumer complaints in the country.

The latest Checkbook.org ratings are based on feedback from actual auto repair customers in King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish counties.

Checkbook's Kevin Brasler says too many people fail to do a basic background check on shops they've never used.

"They pick the car up and they say it was fixed, and the pay for it and take the car home and the problem wasn't fixed at all, or they fixed the wrong problem," said Brasler.

Local customers rated nearly 400 shops for accurate repairs, pricing and advice, starting and finishing on time and overall quality.

The good news? There are plenty of quality auto repair shops in our area that will get the job done for a reasonable price, and stand behind their work.

But finding the best can be a challenge if you don't already have a relationship.

The best advice? If you don't already have a relationship with a dependable repair shop - shop around now before you need one.

The full Checkbook.org ratings and tips on Auto Repair Shops will be accessible on this website until September 15, 2017.
