A roof is like an umbrella. You don't think about it until you need it. And when you do, you want it to keep you dry.
A new roof is expensive. Maintain it and that roof should last 25 to 30 years.
Here's a tip from Cheryl Reed at Angie's List. Just because you have a leak doesn't mean you need a new roof.
"You need to find a good contractor to come out and inspect that roof," Reed said. "Ask for a repair. Don't just assume you need a replacement."
Reed reminds us that roof work can be done during the rainy months. If you have a problem, there's no need to wait until summer.
"You might even get a great deal and even faster service if you call during the off season, if you will, because roofers are out there," she noted. "They still need to work and if they can possibly get to you and do the job right, they will."
Remember, if you don't fix a small problem, it will become a bigger and more expensive one.
"What you're risking is the condition of everything up there: your gutters, your walls, your flooring. Don't ignore a leaky roof," Reed said.
