You've decided it's time for a fence around your yard. Before you can choose a type of fence, you need to figure out why you want a fence.

"Are you looking for something decorative or are you looking for privacy, because that's going to determine what type of fence you should install,” said Angie Hicks, founder of Angie's List.

Wood is most popular for privacy, but ornamental fencing adds the greatest value. If price is your prime consideration, chain link and wood are economical choices.

Along with the initial cost of that fence, you need to consider the maintenance costs over the years.

"Wood fences are beautiful, but remember, they need to be stained periodically,” Hicks noted. “If you want a maintenance-free fence you might want to consider aluminum or vinyl."

Vinyl or composite fences have clean, uniform lines and they're easy to maintain – there’s no painting or staining required.

Aluminum, steel and traditional wrought iron fences are best for establishing boundaries while maintaining a view.

A well-constructed fence can boost property values, but a poor decision will detract from your home's value and make it harder to sell, Hicks said.
