Ice cream anyone? Top-rated brands from Consumer Reports
I love ice cream any time of year, but it's a real summer treat.
Vanilla and chocolate are still America's favorite flavors, and while you can serve me a good vanilla any time, I prefer something with a little more pizzazz: rum raisin, cherry vanilla and mint chocolate chip.
For its June issue, Consumer Reports ShopSmart magazine rated a few flavors, including mint chocolate chip.
Haagen-Dazs Mint Chip was a runaway favorite. The magazine's tasters said it had bold mint flavor and lots of crunchy dark-chocolate bits.
Dreyer's/Edy's Grand Mint Chocolate Chip was another top pick. It has a hint of spearmint and dark-chocolate bits with slight coffee notes.
Maybe you'd prefer something a little bolder, like chocolate brownie?
Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie was the clear winner. It has a brownie pieces and a dense, rich, smooth texture. ShopSmart's tasters said chocoholics will absolutely love it.
Dryer's/Edy's Grand Fudge Brownie is another good choice. It has coca swirls and brown bits that enhance the chocolate ice cream, as well as a hint of malt.
And finally for the purists, the best vanillas.
Ben & Jerry's Vanilla takes the top spot. Tasters liked the dense, super-smooth texture and rich dairy taste. If big vanilla taste is what you crave, this is the ice cream for you, they say.
Haagen-Daz Vanilla, described as decadent and creamy, came in a close second. It has a more subtle flavor than Ben & Jerry's.
And since I don't want to spoil the mood - we won't even talk about how much fat and sugar and calories these super ice creams have. Just remember, ice cream is a treat...not an entree!
