Homeowners insurance does not cover maintenance-related problems
Spring is here and we're all spending more time with outdoor projects.
This is the perfect time to spruce up the house - and inspect it - for wear and tear or any safety hazards that need to be fixed.
Remember, putting off that maintenance work can lead to expensive repairs down the road. Remember, many of the losses that can result from lack of maintetance are not covered by your homeowners insurance.
"Homeowners insurance is designed to protect you from sudden and accidental losses, that could be a fire, windstorm, theft a broken water pipe. It's not intended to cover maintenance-related issues such as water damage from a leaky roof or a cracked foundation," said Karl Newman, president of the Northwest Insurance Council.
So, it's important to look for potential problems and perform that preventative maintenance. Here are a few things to get your started:
Check and clean gutters to prevent water from backing up into your attic.
Check the roof. Look for worn, curled or missing shingles and replace them.
Repair loose or damaged siding.
Make sure downspouts slope away from the home and carry water at least five feet from the foundation walls.
