Health insurance for college students
There's a lot to do before your son or daughter heads off to college. One of those things on your checklist should be health in insurance. You need to make sure your child is covered by the family policy.
Janet Bodnar, editor of Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine, says under Obamacare some insurance policies now have much narrower network coverage.
"So it's possible that if your child is going to school a long way away from home, there may not be in-network physicians or in-network providers that are covered by your insurance policy," she said. "If that's the case, you need to know that and you need to know what steps you might have to take."
There's an easy way to find out - just contact your insurance carrier and ask.
"Is your child going to be covered if he shows up at the hospital with a broken leg? You just want to know something like that," Bodnar explained. "Ask if there are any restrictions or if there's anything you need to do in advance to make sure that your child would be covered under those circumstances."
If the answer is no - and your child does not have the necessary coverage under your family policy - you might see if the college or university offers a policy at a reasonable price.
