Wouldn't it be nice if there were ways to fool yourself into eating less?
Maybe you can. Here are few tricks based on studies reported in the Journal of Consumer Research.
Use smaller plates and bowls and you'll serve yourself less food. It sounds simple, but it works. We made the switch at my house a few years ago and it's made a big difference. The trick is not to go back for seconds.
You might also want to make sure your dishware is a different color than your food. Researchers found that as the difference in color goes up, the portion size goes down. Go figure! So serve that chili in a white bowl instead of a red one and you may eat less.
Snacks can really up your calorie intake. Eat from a big bag and it's hard to stop. To enforce portion control try those 100-calorie snack packs.
If you don't want to pay extra for, do it yourself. Take that big bag of pretzels and divide it into smaller 100-calorie servings and put them into plastic bags.
Finally, concentrate on eating. Distractions, such as eating while online or watching TV cause us to eat more.
