Can anything really help prevent dementia?

Despite all the marketing hype, there is no supplement you can take and no food you can eat that will keep you from getting dementia.

But there are things you can do to reduce the risk.

"The best way we can avoid dementia is to be as healthy as we can be," said Dr. Michael Chun, a neurologist at The Everett Clinic.

That means lose any excess weight, control your blood pressure and be as active as possible. Try to get some exercise every day.

"I'm talking about walking or using the elliptical machine or even stationary bike. And once you start you continue for at least 20 or 30 minutes," Chun said.

All of these things can help manage your blood sugar levels. And that latest reseach shows that doing this is important.

"Dementia has recently been associated with high sugar levels and diabetes, Chun told me. "We believe that better control of the diabetes slows the rate of memory loss."

One more thing you can do: exercise your brain.

"It can be anything that's challenging, anything that pushes your boundaries a little. The brain is a bit like a muscle, if you don't use it, you'll lose it," Chun explained.
