How to Go Turbo in the Honda Civic

The 2017 Si comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 1.5L turbo 4-cyl. engine.

The Honda Civic has been around for awhile, but the 2017 lineup of vehicles offers something new and exciting: turbocharged engines. For some body styles the turbocharge comes standard, for others it’s part of an upgraded trim package. Here’s a guide on where to find turbochargers.

Civic Sedan

The first two trim levels, the LX and EX don’t have the turbo – it’s only the EX-T, EX-L and Touring that come with the 174-HP 1.5L turbocharged engine. The EX-T trim level, the first that includes the turbo, also comes with a decklid spoiler, dual-zone climate control and heated front seats. Combined with standard features and included EX upgrades like the power moonroof and remote-start capabilities, the EX-T is a great everyday drive with some pizzazz.

Civic Sedan Si

The Si stands for Sports Injected, and it also means an injection of turbocharging – the Civic Sedan SI comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 1.5L turbo 4-cyl. engine. With the sport bumper and gloss black grille, the Civic SI has sporty style injected too.

Civic Coupe

As with sedan models, the first two trim levels for the Civic Coupe, the LX and LX-P, don’t have a turbo. It’s only the EX-T, EX-L and Touring that have the 174-HP 1.5L turbocharged engine.

Civic Coupe Si

As the Sport Injected version of the coupe, the 2017 Civic Coupe Si comes standard with a 6-speed transmission and a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cyl. engine. A rear spoiler and a glossy black grill in front give this car a serious dose of style.

Civic Hatchback

Even the base level LX hatchback has a turbocharged engine: it’s packing a 174-HP, 1.5L. Starting with the second trim level, the Sport, the Civic Hatchback gets an upgrade to the 180-HP 1.5L turbocharged engine which also powers the EX, EX-L Navi and the Sport Touring.

Civic Type-R

The hatchback doesn’t have an SI model – instead, its sports version manifests as the Honda Civic Type-R. With a 2-L turbocharged engine, this vehicle has an output of 306-HP. This model also includes a special R+ driving mode characterized by an adjustment to the steering weight, throttle response, stability control, adaptive dampers and will enable automatic rev-matching.
