WSP: Speed a factor in fatal Pierce County motorcycle crash

TACOMA, Wash. -- A 22-year-old Tacoma man was killed Monday evening when he crashed his motorcycle into a barrier on State Route 509 near Dash Point State Park.

Washington State Patrol trooper Guy Gill said the motorcyclist was speeding and trying to pass a car in a no-passing zone when he crashed into a barrier at about 5:30 p.m.

Medics arrived on scene moments later, but they were unable to save the man.

The biker was wearing a helmet at the time of the wreck, but he didn't have a motorcycle endorsement, according to Gill. Gill called the crash "Very sad and totally preventable."

Traffic on SR-509 was not impacted.
