Woman, children hit by flying debris as Metro bus tire explodes

SEATTLE - A woman and three children were hit by flying debris when a Metro bus tire exploded near them Friday morning in Seattle's International District.

Eyewitnesses said it sounded like "a bomb going off" when the bus tire blew out near the intersection of 12th Avenue South and S. Jackson Street at about 9 a.m. Friday.

"I mean really like a bomb. Boom! Amazing, the first time in my life I heard a flat tire like that," a chef from a nearby restaurant said.

Four people walking on the sidewalk nearby were hit by the flying debris from the tire.

Ambulances responded to the scene and medics treated a woman, two boys and a girl for abrasions. They were taken to a hospital to make sure they didn't have more serious injuries.

A long gash was visible in the side of the tire after the incident.
