'Thirsty Girl' Leslie Sbrocco explains why wine is like fashion

There's no doubt about it. The emergence of Washington wine has produced a whole new crop of women wine aficionados. That inspired Leslie Sbrocco to create a new company that encourages food and wine lovers everywhere to share their passions.

Thirsty Girl is a vibrant community of women who thirst for fun and fulfillment. This rapidly expanding group connects members with one another through live events, local chapters, the Thirsty Girl website, award-winning TGTV video series, and active social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter.

As a wine expert and author, Sbrocco has been lucky enough to speak at Taste Washington numerous times and has been a fan of Washington wines for more than a decade. Thirsty Girl was launched in late 2010 and has been very popular in Washington partly due to the support of one of its partners, especially Chateau Ste. Michelle winery.

"We've hosted events in Seattle in the past year and have two chapters of Thirsty Girls who actively learn, laugh and share wine together," Sbrocco said.

On the Thirsty Girl LIVE! Tour, Sbrocco showcases the Chateau Ste. Michelle's Eroica Riesling and helps spread the joy of Riesling around the country. Recently, Thirsty Girl has added another Washington partner, Precept, and Sbrocco pours several of their wines on tour.

When sharing her wine knowledge with other women, Sbrocco often compares wine to building a wardrobe. She got the idea when describing a Washington state merlot as "the cashmere of the wine world because of its supple, smooth texture," she said. The concept resonated and Sbrocco built on it from there.

"Popular, flexible chardonnay is the basic black of any wine wardrobe, Riesling with its ethereal lightness is the perfect spring dress and structured, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon is the classic suit of any wine wardrobe," she said. "It makes sense to think of building options to please your palate just as you assemble a closet full of clothes to fit your style."

This year, Thirsty Girl is a featured sponsor of the 24th Annual Northwest Women's Show, kicking off this weekend in Seattle. This highly anticipated event will have over four hundred exhibitors and four entertainment stages for participants to enjoy.

At the event, guests will have a chance to become a free member of Thirsty Girl and meet Sbrocco at the show. Attendees can sample the Thirsty Girl LIVE! partner wines including: Chateau Ste. Michelle "Eroica" Riesling, Villa Maria "Private Bin" Sauvignon Blanc, Beringer Napa Valley Chardonnay, Emma Pearl Chardonnay, HandCraft Pinot Noir, Black Box Merlot, House Wine red blend, and Chocolate Shop.

Sbrocco is hosting several Thirsty Girl Wine Hour workshops during the show to teach audiences about the basics of food and wine pairing for entertaining, how to build the essential wardrobe of wine, and how to sip, smell and swirl wine like a pro. She'll also teach novices how to order wine off a restaurant list with confidence.

"The event looks amazing and I can't wait to bring Thirsty Girl and the NW Women's show together over a glass of wine," Sbrocco said. "The sales on wine at the show benefit charity so it's a win/win all around."
