The officers were not hurt and the suspect was taken to Tacoma General Hospital where his current condition was not known.
Lakewood Police Lt. Chris Lawler said the chase began just before 10 p.m. when the officers spotted the stolen car while on patrol near Gravelly Lake Drive and Interstate 5.
The driver refused to stop and sped north on I-5, eventually exiting at Portland Avenue in Tacoma.
Officers used a PIT maneuver to force the fleeing car to stop. That's when the driver shot at the officers, Lawler said.
It was not immediately clear how many shots were fired, but the suspect was hit at least once when the officers returned fire.
Police cordoned off the area overnight, and officials said they found evidence of drug use in the stolen car.
The two officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for police shootings.
