SPD officer in serious condition following violent crash into pole

SEATTLE - A Seattle police officer is in serious condition Saturday morning after a violent crash in the Rainer Valley neighborhood late Friday night.

Emergency crews arrived at Rainier Avenue South and South Garden Street around 1:30 a.m. to find a police cruiser had crashed into a power pole, which then broke and landed on the back of the cruiser.

"The patrol car then struck three parked unoccupied cars before coming to a rest against a tree," said Detective Mark Jamieson.

Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives are still investigating what caused the officer to lose control of his patrol car.

The injured officer was treated at the scene and taken to Harborview in serious condition, but with non-life threatening injuries.
