Troopers said one car spun out, then caused a chain-reaction crash involving four others in the westbound lanes at Sprague Street around 8 a.m., blocking all lanes. Trooper Guy Gill said that one person was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Later that hour, troopers reported there were multiple crashes in the eastbound lanes as well at that same location, blocking at least one lane. Troopers were able to clear all lanes just after 10 a.m.
Gill said road conditions were icy, and weather observations around Tacoma indicated freezing fog.
"Icy roads don't cause collisions, they're only a factor," Gill tweeted. "The person behind the wheel causes the collision. Adjust your driving 4 conditions."
