Seattle: Snuggle up with a book this month
January marks National Book Month, and our chilly winter weather make it perhaps the best month to curl up with a new or favorite book. Whether you are treating yourself by reading your favorite books again or with joining a book club, you can get lost in books all month long with these fun ways to celebrate.
Joining a book club
Joining a book club is a great way to remain dedicated to reading each week and an awesome way to meet fellow book lovers. Usually, a new book is chosen every month and is discussed throughout the gatherings.
The North Seattle Book Club welcomes anyone from the ages 20-60 and meets the third Tuesday every month in Wallingford. The Readers Circle offers a great resource for seeking out local book clubs. Some on the site include: The Northwest Greats (authors from the Northwest) or the Science Fiction and Fantasy book club. Also, check out the Bushwick Book Club. After finishing the month's seclection, members of this book club write and perform songs inspired by the book at various theaters around town.
Throwing a book-themed party
Not your normal party theme, but a great one - get your friends together to have some snacks, drinks and a good read. It's a great activity for a down day and can be at your home, local library or a bookstore.
The Seattle Library also hosts author readings series, where you can hear authors read from their books, purchase or check out a copy, get it signed, and learn about the creative process that gets such magnificent stories told.
Reading with your family
Use this occasion to get your family involved in books. Set a reading time each night and read aloud with your family, husband or kids. Maybe decide on reading a chapter or two each night with everyone. This is a time the family can look forward to each day.
Host a book swap with Friends
Some of the best books I've read have been recommended from my best friends. You can switch your favorite for their favorite, or explore a neighbors, family members or friends house for books that are lying around and collecting dust. Or you can also organize a book swap with a group of gals. You can also ask the librarians at the Seattle Public Library without ever leaving your home, they'll suggest your next five books after you tell them about some you've already enjoyed.
Getting Yourself a New Book
In honor of the month go get yourself a new book. Have you heard about a good one lately? Do you want a new series? How about an e-reader like the Kindle or Nook? Go for it. The local bookstore is great, or you can even buy books online for your laptop or e-reader. (I love my kindle!)
No matter how you celebrate take the time to rediscover your love for reading this month.
