Schrammie: Pasco bent on silencing the ice cream truck

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream.

Unless you live in Pasco.

In Pasco, the sounds associated with summer are under attack by city officials.

So I'd like to invite Pasco city council members to quit licking their fudgesicles and come on down.

Seems a recent citizen's survey tipped the council to the fact that noise is one of the top concerns of Pasco residents.

Jackhammers, throbbing car stereos, leaf blowers, lawnmowers and... ice cream vendors!

Yes, those tinkling, melodious, "can't-get-those-songs-out-of-my-head" tunes played by the ice cream man.

Pasco police are not enthused about checking the decibel levels of the ice cream trucks as they weave their way through neighborhoods full of excited children, but are compelled to abide by the council's dictate that popsicle melodies can be subject to a $250 fine.

Maybe Pasco city council members have forgotten about childhood summer days; about how ice cream truck music instills a certain sense of excitement in kids.

Maybe when you become a bureaucrat you also surrender that child-like part of you and you can no longer appreciate a summer moment.

So maybe that's when, if you're a Pasco council member, you need to step up and take a bow, because this "Schrammie" is for you.
