Public memorial service set for WSP trooper Sean O'Connell

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - The Washington State Patrol says a public memorial service is planned Thursday in Everett for a state trooper killed in a traffic accident.

The service honoring 38-year-old Trooper Sean O'Connell is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Comcast Arena.

O'Connell died Friday night after his motorcycle collided with a box truck. He had been working traffic control related to a detour established after the collapse of a section of the Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

O'Connell had been with the patrol for 16 years and had previously been named Trooper of the Year for his district.

O'Connell is only the second trooper to be killed in the line of duty since 1999, and the first since trooper Tony Radulescu was gunned down in February 2012.

As many as 150 police cruisers participated in a motorcade that honored him Sunday.
