Porsche driver charged in high-speed chase, fiery crash

MERCER ISLAND, Wash. - A Bellevue man is now facing several charges for eluding police and driving under the influence after a chase and crash on Mercer Island.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m. Friday night, a trooper clocked a Porshe Panamera going at least 150 miles per hour just minutes before in the eastbound express lanes of Interstate 90, according to Washington State Patrol's Sgt. Courtney Stewart. The trooper tried to catch up, and watched as the car exited the freeway. That's when the driver lost control and crashed into on office building at SE 30th and Island Crest Way.

The car burst into flames after the crash, but Mercer Island Firefighters, with assistance from Bellevue Fire Department, were able to prevent the flames from spreading to the building.

Both occupants were outside the sports car when emergency crews arrived, and were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

"It was just pure luck that driving that recklessly and at those speeds that nobody else was hurt," Stewart said.

Police have charged the driver for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and vehicular assault.
