Police say the woman was walking in the 23800 block of 30th Avenue South at about 3:30 a.m. when a stranger approached her. The man took out a weapon and forced the woman to a nearby secluded area, where he sexually assaulted her, according to police.
The attacker is described as a black man in his 20s who stands roughly 5'2" tall with a thin build. He was wearing a camouflage hoodie and a long pair of light-colored shorts. Police say his face was partially covered during the attack.
Kent Police Department detective Melanie Frazier said these types of cases are especially tough.
"It's hard to not get personal with that individual and really get a feeling of how this person was victimized," she said. "It's a tough situation. It's to get the details and hear the experience first-hand."
Police are now working with the victim to develop a composite sketch of the assailant.
In the meantime, detectives are warning women to be on the lookout.
"We want to ensure that the public is aware of this occurrence and are asking the public to remain vigilant for this man. In addition, Kent Patrol units will be actively conducting extra patrols in this area," Frazier said
Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call the Kent Police tip line at 253-856-5808. All calls will be treated confidentially and callers may stay anonymous.
