Police: Speeding driver causes 9-car crash near Northgate Mall

SEATTLE -- Six people were injured in a nine-car pileup near Northgate Mall that happened when a woman sped through a busy intersection, police said.

Just before 4 p.m., officers noted a woman driving erratically on NE 92nd Street at 1st Avenue NE, said Det. Jeff Kappel with Seattle police. Officers turned around to pull the woman over and activated their emergency lights.

The woman slowed down and was coming to a stop when she suddenly accelerated toward the intersection at N. 107 Street, Kappel said.

The driver sped through the intersection, striking multiple cars.

Seattle Fire officials say one person was critically injured and taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Five others, including the suspect, were also taken to local hospitals for various injuries. All were expected to survive.

Kappel said the causing driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
