Police arrest suspected burglar who claimed to have grenade

EVERETT, Wash. -- A suspected burglar who had been holed up in an Everett home he was attempting to rob and claimed to have a grenade has been arrested after an hours-long standoff with police.

No one was hurt.

The incident began around 1:45 p.m. when neighbors reported a burglar inside the home in the 3800 block of Wetmore Avenue. Officers arrived to find the burglar just outside the home. He ran back in and officers followed, but once inside the home the burglar told officers he had a grenade and would blow up the home.

Police retreated and called in a SWAT team for negotiations. Neighbors were asked to either stay inside their home or leave the area.

The stalemate lasted well into Friday evening until police found the man hiding in a crawl space below the home around 10 p.m. He was arrested without incident.

Police identified him as 40-year-old Jason M. Riley of Lake Stevens. He's been booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of burglary. No grenade was found.
