Pedestrian killed by Amtrak train in Puyallup

PUYALLUP, Wash. - A man is dead after being hit by an Amtrak passenger train Sunday night in Puyallup.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas says the crash occurred about 9 p.m. when a northbound Amtrak train struck an adult male pedestrian between the Sounder platform and 5th Street.

Officials are investigating and Melonas says no further details on the accident or the victim are available.

The accident occurred on a BNSF mainline running between Portland and Seattle. Melonas says that the tracks were shut down for a few hours after the crash.

He said this is the 20th person to be struck and killed on BNSF tracks in 2013.
