Olympia trucker killed in Pierce County crash

PUYALLUP, Wash. -- Washington State Patrol troopers say a fatal Wednesday afternoon semi crash near Puyallup could have been caused by a medical incident.

A 74-year-old Olympia man was driving a semi truck southbound on State Route 167 when he tried to exit onto eastbound State Route 410 just after 1:30 p.m.

The man lost control of the truck, went off the road and slammed into the SR-176 overpass support column, according to WSP.

He did not survive the crash.

Traffic was temporarily blocked in the area as troopers removed the semi and cleaned debris from the road. The truck was carrying 40,000 pounds of apples and pumpkins, according to WSP.

The investigation is ongoing, but troopers say the crash could have been caused by a medical incident.
