Mukilteo man killed in climbing accident on Lewis Peak

VERLOT, Wash. - A Mukilteo man was killed over the weekend in a climbing accident at the summit of Lewis Peak, east of Verlot, in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, according to officials and published reports.

Lt. Steve Dittoe of the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office says deputies got a call about a climbing accident involving a two-person team at about 5 p.m. Saturday.

The climber, identified by the Everett Herald as Franklin Bradshaw of Mukilteo, was standing on a cornice when it gave way and triggered an avalanche, Dittoe said. Bradshaw died when he was caught up in the avalanche.

A 41-person team, including members of Everett Mountain Rescue, were able to recover the victim's body from the mountain. Dittoe described it as a "very technical rescue" in difficult terrain.

Friends say Bradshaw was an experienced climber and skier.
