Mason County sheriff's deputy killed in motorcycle crash

SHELTON, Wash. - One of the Mason County's newest sheriff deputies was killed Tuesday when her motorcycle collided with a semi truck, officials said.

State troopers, medics and other deputies responded to the scene, about nine miles south of Shelton at Highway 101 and Hurley Waldrip Road, at 3:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a serious accident involving a semi and motorcycle.

The motorcyclist, later identified as Mason County Jail Deputy Sheriff Rachael B. Stuhlmiller, 25, was found dead at the scene.

Mason County sheriff's officials said she was driving to work when the crash happened.

A preliminary investigation found that Stuhlmiller was heading north on Highway 101 and the semi rig was headed south. The semi driver, a 35-year-old Elma man, turned left onto Hurley Waldrip Road, and Stuhlmiller collided with the trailer.

A Mason County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said Stuhlmiller was one of the newest jail deputies and was just sworn in on May 1 in front of her family, friends and co-workers. She had previously served in the U.S. military before being hired by the Sheriff's Office.
