The owner and a customer inside the store, Bonaci Fine Jewelers in the 300 block of E. Smith St., were unhurt, but it is unclear if the suspect was wounded, Sgt. Jarod Kasner said.
A Kent Police source said earlier that he believed the suspect was shot twice.
"People have the right to protect themselves," Kasner said. ."It just has to be reasonable. There has to be exigent circumstances and feel that their life may be in danger or threatened."
Police only have a vague description of the suspect, a black man in his 20s who wore dark clothing..a hoodie.and gloves.
The suspect, believed to be in his 20s, fled on foot and may have gotten into a car.
The suspect came into the store armed with a gun as a customer was leaving.
The incident was over quickly and nothing was taken, police said.
The store was closed for the rest of the day. Kent Police detectives interviewed the owner and seeking evidence from video surveillance footage.
The owner has not made any public comments.
