JBLM soldier killed defending woman during stabbing
GRAHAM, Wash. -- A Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier died on Sunday while trying to save a woman who was being stabbed.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a home in Graham on the 9800 block of 185th Street East around 4 a.m. after a woman at the residence called to report the stabbing.
Sheriff spokesman Ed Troyer said a group of people went to the home after a night of drinking and that's where Chase Devyver, 29, stabbed a woman in the back then turned the knife on the soldier who tried to help the victim. The soldier was stabbed in the chest and died at the scene.
"I got up this morning and saw the police cars out here, tape out, medical examiner showed up," said neighbor Anthony Rae.
Investigators said the suspect stole a gun and the woman's credit cards before leaving the scene.
"I didn't hear anything. I just woke up to the fire department and ambulance in front of my house," said neighbor Joe'l Bilbo.
A military spokesman said the man who died was a member of the 2nd Stryker Brigade at JBLM.
Devyver was arrested after a high-speed pursuit with a deputy. He was booked at the Pierce County jail on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
