The man, who is in his 40s, was shot just after 4:30 p.m. near MLK Jr. Way and East Cherry Street, said Det. Jeff Kappel with Seattle police.
The victim was one of three adults and two children inside a van when the shots rang out, hitting the victim. Police say the man had just picked up his parents from the airport and was leaving town for a Memorial Day weekend vacation.
Police say several people were arguing near the intersection when one of the men took out a gun and opened fire on the group. At the same time, the victim and his family pulled up to MLK and Cherry and a stray bullet hit the man, killing him.
"These folks were not involved in any way. Wrong place, wrong time, tragically," said Assistant Police Chief Nick Metz.
Elizabeth Jaime was at the stop light just a car length or two behind the van and witnessed the shooting.
"I looked and I just seen the lady get out of the car and grab her face like, 'Oh my God,'" she said..
There is no detailed description of the shooter.
