Forbes names Gates No. 1 giver in 2012
SEATTLE - Power couple Bill and Melinda Gates shelled out nearly $2 billion in contributions last year, earning them the number one spot on Forbes' 50 Top Givers list.
The list, which includes the likes of Warren Buffett, Mark Zuckerberg and Michael Bloomberg, can be viewed online and will be included in the Dec. 2 edition of Forbes.
Forbes worked with Philanthropic Research Institute to come up with the list. It only takes into account money that was actually received in 2012, not money that was pledged.
According to Forbes, Gates gave $1.9 billion to help eliminate polio and fight malaria through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Included among his biggest recipients were the World Health Organization, the Medicines for Malaria Venture and the United Negro College Fund.
