State troopers and medics responded to the scene, on southbound Interstate 705 near 21st Street in Tacoma, at about 7:10 p.m. Monday after receiving a report of a serious crash, said Trooper Guy Gill.
When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found a black 2008 Audi lying on its top. The driver, a 43-year-old Tacoma man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released pending notification of next of kin.
A preliminary investigation found that the Audi was heading south on I-705 and took the off-ramp to 21st Street, where it failed to make the turn and crossed the traffic island onto Highway 509.
The car then continued across Highway 509 and crossed a second traffic island to the I-705 entrance ramp. The Audi then slammed into the jersey barrier and vaulted over it, landing on its top in the southbound lane of I-705.
Emergency responders had to extricate the driver's body from the car after the crash. It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
All but one lane was closed at the scene for a few hours after the crash during the investigation.
