Trooper Keith Leary says a pick-up truck crossed the center line near the intersection of U.S. 2 and SR-9 just after 5 a.m. and struck a passenger car head-on.
The 53-year-old driver of the passenger car was pronounced dead at the scene. The 37-year-old driver of the pickup was taken to an Everett hospital where he was listed in serious condition.
Leary says investigators are still looking into what caused the crash, but there was heavy frost on the shoulders, and he warned roads were slick in areas around Snohomish County. Leary said neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be factors.
The crash forced the closure of U.S. 2 near the area for nearly five hours. The roadway reopened just before 10 a.m.
Editor's Note: It was originally reported in this story based on initial information from troopers that it was the passenger car that crossed the center line and struck the truck. Further investigation revealed it was the truck that crossed the center line.
