David D. Scheinost, 24, of Puyallup was part of a dive team sampling geoduck clams on July 24 at Restoration Point for paralytic shellfish poisoning. He reportedly surfaced briefly and sank. Two other divers with the team searched immediately but couldn't find him.
The death certificate for Scheinost now indicates the cause of death is "salt water drowning" with a contributing factor being "acute cocaine intoxication," the Kitsap County Sheriff's office said Tuesday. The certificate further states that Scheinost drowned while scuba diving and was intoxicated by cocaine.
Scheinost's body was later recovered on July 27. Bainbridge police detectives continue to investigate the incident.
