With big acts like funk/R&B legend Charles Bradley and Seattle indie rock folk hero Damien Jurado on the bill, it's hard to believe that this is only Timber! Outdoor Music Festival's second year. Though, to be fair, the lineup announced this morning -- which is just half of the acts that have been confirmed -- is technically their third.
After a successful summer weekend in Carnation and another big turnout at its winter version in Leavenworth in January, Timber!, which is co-hosted by Artist Home, the organizing body responsible for the immensely popularly Doe Bay Festival, is positioning itself as one of the region's newest must-attend festival.
This year's summer lineup -- which spans three days, rather than two, like last year -- includes hip-hop staple The Physics, Dinosaur, Jr.'s J Mascis, Rocky Votolato, and 2013's local musical darling, Cumulus.
Timber! is held at the 574-acre Told-MacDonald Park, and is billed is a family-friendly event wherein ticketholders camp on county-owned park property and can enjoy hikes and other outdoor activities, as well as musical shows.
The festival also works hard to benefit the city of Carnation; last year's festival helped pay for this year's Fourth of July party, co-founder Kevin Sur says.
"Part of what attracted us to Carnation is that we thought it was a beautiful town with really friendly people. We've been involved in the community a lot," Sur explained last year.
And while it may seem early to announce dates and a festival, the move might be strategic; last year, Timber! was scheduled for the same weekend as the Capitol Hill Block Party, which caused some booking issues and left music fans in the region conflicted about what to attend. At this time, the Block Party has not yet announced any plans for 2014.
According to Timber!'s Twitter account, today's announcement represents just half of the bands who have confirmed their appearance at the festival; the rest is slated to be announced tomorrow, and will probably be just as, if not more, exciting.
Timber! Outdoor Music Festival will be held at Told-MacDonald Park and Campground in Carnation, Washington, from July 24 to July 26. Information about tickets, camping and more are available from the festival's website.
