Charge: Bellevue man groped sex shop worker, girl at bus stop

SEATTLE -- A 51-year-old Bellevue man accused of groping a sex shop worker and a teen girl during separate incidents now faces felony sex crime charges.

King County prosecutors contend Amrik Singh Kang groped a 23-year-old woman at a Redmond sex shop after asking to test a sex toy. Kang is alleged to have then fondled a 16-year-old girl after following her off a Metro bus in Bellevue.

Writing the court, Senior Deputy Prosecutor Carol Spoor noted the similarity in the two attacks in which Kang is accused.

"Although no criminal history was located, the current allegations are serious and cause concern for community safety," Spoor said.

Kang, the prosecutor continued, "is charged with two incidents of sexual touching, both times with complete strangers that he encountered in public places, and both incidents occurred within a few days of each other."

The initial attack is alleged to have occurred at 7 p.m. on June 24 at a Lover's sex shop in Redmond.

According to charging papers, a 23-year-old woman working at the store reported a man - since identified as Kang - grabbed her breasts after examining a sex toy.

Speaking with police, the woman said Kang questioned her about the sex toy before asking if he could "try it out" in the shop's bathroom, a Redmond detective told the court. The woman told Kang he could not.

As she turned to walk away, Kang grabbed the woman's arm and then both her breasts, the detective told the court. Kang is alleged to have also grabbed her bottom before she forced him from the store.

The entire incident was caught on camera, according to charging papers. Kang was not identified as a suspect or apprehended, though, until the second incident on July 1 aboard a Metro bus in Bellevue.

Just after 5 p.m., a 16-year-old girl was riding a bus in the 1900 block of 156th Avenue Northeast when a man since identified as Kang boarded the bus. The girl disembarked shortly thereafter, as did Kang.

Speaking with police, the girl said she was crying a Kang, a stranger to her, offered her a hug, which she accepted. According to charging papers, Kang groped her breasts during the hug and asked if she was married or pregnant.

Kang was identified as a suspect three weeks later, when the girl's mother told police she believed she saw Kang at a Bellevue apartment.

According to police, both the sex shop worker and the teen identified Kang as the assailant. A shirt similar to the one pictured in the Lover's surveillance video was also recovered during a search of Kang's apartment.

Kang was arrested July 25. He declined to speak with police about the allegations.

Prosecutors charged Kang with indecent liberties and fourth-degree assault with sexual motivation. Initially jailed, he was released after posting bond on $100,000 bail.
