Car crashes into gate at Lewis-McChord; driver killed

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Authorities are investigating after a car crashed into a gate guardhouse at Joint Base Lewis-McChord early Thursday, killing the driver and damaging the guardhouse.

Base spokesman Matt Hinkle said the vehicle was exiting the base when it slammed into the guardhouse at Lewis-McChord's East Gate sometime before 5 a.m.

The impact reportedly damaged the guardhouse and sparked a fire that was quickly extinguished. The guardhouse was unoccupied at the time of the crash.

The driver of the car died in the crash. No one else was in the vehicle.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord is investigating the crash and working to positively identify the driver of the car.

There was no immediate explanation of what caused the vehicle to crash into the gate.

One lane of incoming traffic is currently being allowed in through the East Gate, Hinkle said. Outgoing traffic is being diverted out Roy Gate.
