After 24 years, time capsule keepers meet at state Capitol

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) A group of people who were children when they were sworn in in 1989 by then-Gov. Booth Gardner to be keepers of the state's centennial time capsule have reconvened for the first time in 24 years.

The group opened up safe containing the time capsule on Tuesday and later held a meeting to discuss what might be added to the 2014 capsule next year for the state's 125th birthday.

The safe, located on the south side first floor of the Capitol, contains 16 mini-capsules, which will be filled every 25 years until all of the capsules are slated to be opened in 2389, the state's 500th birthday. The capsule from 1989 contains 10,000 messages to the future from Washington citizens, newspapers, a cookbook and Washington state wines from that year, among other items.
