6-story development that will replace The Viking moves forward

The days continue to be numbered for The Viking, Ballard's 62-year-old bar, as developers are moving forward with a six-story mixed-use building that would replace the bar, plus an adjacent barbershop and house, along 24th Avenue Northwest.

This month, developers completed an application to build the proposed building at 6404 24th Ave. N.W., which will join an already-approved building planned for the corner of 24th Avenue and Northwest 65th Street.

The new building would include 54 residential units and ground-floor commercial space and would share an underground garage for up to 70 cars with phase 1 of the project next door.

Recent designs show setbacks and balconies to soften the building's impact on neighbors to the east. There is also the possibility of live/work units along the east side of the building. And, parking garage ramps could be located on both 65th Street and Northwest 64th Street.

At the first public design meeting for the project in July, approximately 70 Ballard residents showed up to weigh in on the project.

Some felt the proposed building was too big and too tall to fit the neighborhood. Others worried that the parking garage entrances would be dangerous or wondered if there would be a to incorporate the historic aspects of the existing buildings.

Before construction on the proposed building can begin, the developer still needs environmental and design approval, meaning there will be at least one more public meeting in the near future. In the meantime, neighbors can send comments to the city through Nov. 14.

Owners of The Viking have expressed interest in moving into one of the new building's commercial spaces when it is complete.
